Originally from Nokia in Finland, Nokian is a tyre brand recognised worldwide. It is particularly renowned for its winter tyres, being the only tyre manufacturer in the world to have its own permanent test facility for winter tyres. Nokian’s Hakkapeliitta brand is recognised in Finland as a registered trademark.
Nokian focuses on the replacement tyre market for cars and consumer vehicles, as well as the premium snow tyre market. They do not supply tyres to car manufacturers for the production of new vehicles. The consistently higher prices found in these markets lead to higher profitability compared to the rest of the tyre industry. Nokian also produces retreading materials and tyre pressure monitors.
The company began its history with a groundwood pulp mill in 1865. Car tyre production began in 1932 by Suomen Gummitehdas Oy. A merger of three companies formed the Nokia Corporation in 1967. Nokian Tyres Limited was created in 1988 as a separate joint venture from the conglomerate when Nokia Corporation began to focus fully on the mobile communications sector.
The mission of Nokian Tyres is to make the world safer by constantly reinventing tyres and their manufacturing. Inspired by its Nordic heritage, the brand develops and manufactures premium tyres for passenger cars, trucks, and heavy machinery, with sustainability at the heart of all its operations.
As the northernmost tyre manufacturer in the world, Nokian produces safe and durable tyres designed to perform in all conditions. Its main markets are the Nordic countries, where it is the leader in the premium tyre segment, as well as North America and Central Europe.
In 1934, Nokian invented the world’s first winter tyre. Since then, the brand has never stopped reinventing safety. Every day, it is ready to rethink, retry, and challenge itself to do more and evolve what it has invented, constantly pushing boundaries in everything it does.
